What is the session method for gambling taxes?
The session method groups your bets into sessions and counts each session's net result as one win or one loss. We use one session per book per day.
It borrows the approach the IRS proposed for slot machines in Notice 2015-21, which was never finalized. No IRS rule or court case defines a session for sports betting, and many gambling tax specialists treat each sports bet as its own session.
The other way counts every bet on its own. That gives bigger totals for both winnings and losses, and it is the conservative approach. Under the 2026 rule, bigger totals can mean more phantom income, so the choice can change your tax.
We show both side by side. If you use the session method, keep your bet-by-bet records and decide it with your CPA.
A calculator, not tax advice. Show this to your CPA. Compare both counting methods with your own totals.
